book twenty : We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Book Title: We Were Liars
Author: E. Lockhart
Series:  None
Genres: Romance, Young Adult, Summer Fiction,Chick Lit, Coming-of-Age, Mystery

I read this in book format.

We Were Liars is a book I will never forget. I was completely captivated by this and I will always remember that feeling when I closed the final page. I adore this cover. The whole reason I picked it up was because of it. It’s what attracted me to this story.

Cadence is a Sinclair. She spends Summers on her family’s private island and is part of a friendship group. They call themselves the Liars. There was an accident. A huge secret. Friendships are destroyed and hearts are broken.

I don’t want to give too much away with describing this book. I am on the fence about how I felt. I am a sucker for a twist and let me tell you, this one was not expected. The book is hauntingly beautiful and you will not rest until you’ve come to the end of it. And then you’ll sit, speechless and breathless.

I read this story whilst on holiday (vacation for you Americans!) and I was completely wrapped up in the We Were Liars bubble. I completed it on the plane home and I remember cursing, gasping, holding my brow with the stress of the book.

It’s truly something.

Please, give it a try and let me know what you thought, or, if you have read it, let me know so we can discuss it!

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

  1. I also read this on holiday a few years back – and I also loved it! I was also blown away by the twist at the end. In fact, reading your review makes me want to re-read it!

    1. I’ve seen so many people disappointed by it but I thought it was so clever. I loved the use of the map and I often flicked back to the front to it so it was a clever add. So happy my review has made you want to re-read it! Thanks for your comment!

  2. I just finished this book! I enjoyed it too, it was something really different – I was really surprised by the twist as well. It’s definitely one of those books you can’t get out of your head for a while after.

    1. It was very different! I enjoyed it, I was something fresh and new that I hadn’t really read before so that was cool. Definitely! It’s a marmite book. You either love it or hate it! Thanks for your comment!

  3. The book looks really tiny!
I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 But I’m surprised the rating was only 3.5 stars. I’m used to 3-star ratings being slightly more negative! haha, I think 3 stars is a good score and I’m glad you do as well.
