Book Title: My Favourite Manson Girl (also known as American Girls in the US)
Author: Alison Umminger
Genres: YA, Contemporary, Fiction, Coming-Of-Age
My Favourite Manson Girl was in my Amazon wish list for months. I was so eager to read it, so I contacted the incredibly sweet author, Alison, and asked her if I could get my hands on a copy to review on my blog. She agreed. Many squeals and cover kisses later, I was able to read the book.
My Favourite Manson Girl is the story of Anna. She has run, or rather, flown away to LA, stealing her Mother’s girlfriend’s credit card to pay for the trip. She stays with her sister but reality soon begins to crash down around her and the amazing life that she thought her sister has isn’t as great as she’d imagined. She’s offered a job researching the Manson Girls, who are real life murderers. She needs the woman, what could go wrong? Well, a lot, actually.
This story is something so refreshingly brilliant, it’s a revelation. I’m not just saying that.
The book’s main character Anna is likeable, relatable and interesting. You really do grow to care for her and her character grows as the story progresses.
This novel is well written, it’s thought provoking and where Alison includes rare talk of girls, sex and violence, it is done in a way that is eye opening, something incredibly important in a young adult story.
It’s simply stunning.
I give this book a strong 4 out of 5 stars.
