Today, I attended the annual Scarecrow Festival for the first time. It’s around 45 minutes from where I live, yet I have never been. It’s been running for 21 years and each year the theme is different.

What is a Scarecrow Festival?image3.JPG

It is a two day themed display of handmade scarecrows by locals and outsiders with prizes for the best entries. They are posed in scenes outside houses and offer great photo opportunities. All of the money raised goes to local charities and good causes.

This year’s theme was Authors, Books and Characters and I image4.JPGjust had to attend! I knew all of the entries would be incredible and I can honestly say I am so glad I wasn’t a judge! I’d not have a clue who to choose as my winner. Each and every scarecrow was incredibly clever and most used funny puns as part of the name, including ‘Fifty Shades of Hay’, ‘The BFG & Crowphie’, ‘Pinnocricrow’, ‘The Strawman’, ‘James Bond, Double Crow Seven’.

We were so lucky that the sun shone all day and the scarecrows remained in beautiful condition. It was wonderful to see the hard work that image1-3residents had gone to and I imagine they all had fun coming up with their ideas and making the scarecrows themselves.

The entire day, I felt proud to be British. Which, I know sounds silly, but it was an incredibly British day, complete when we sat down for tea and cake in the Church Hall. I chose the brownie and freshly made lemonade which were both incredible!

image6With fields of funfair rides, stalls of sweets, food, cider and mini scarecrows for sale, as well as a field full of old cars, the whole day was fun for all genders and ages.

I’ve included images of my favourite scarecrows of the day too, but of course, the photographs will never be as impressive as seeing the real hard work in front of you. image2

It was truly a wonderfully fun day and I cannot wait to find out who won the competition online. It will be such a tough decision for all involved in the judging!

This was such a fantastic theme to choose too, but I am surprised no one did many Harry Potter characters! I was disappointed I didn’t see a straw Voldermort, Bellatrix or Hagrid, they’d have been amazing!

What scarecrow would you have created in this theme? I’d probably have done a Harry Potter theme! Leave a comment with who you’d have made!
